■"A start of something big"
E: Emery Y: Yuka
Yuka is engrossed in the paper she is holding when Emery enters the room.
E: Yuka, what's that serious look in your face? (Emery peeps into the paper)
Y: Oh, I am debating with myself whether to join the upcoming city marathon.
E: Wow, that's something Yuka. Tell me about it.
Y: Actually, my friend who has a knack for sports invited me to join the marathon this year.
E: Why don't you give it a try? Take on a new challenge.
Y: Marathon is not a breeze as any other sport. Training should be done incessantly.
E: You can say that again. When will the big day be?
Y: On September 23. My frisky friend has started running every morning for more than one hour. She's dead serious about it.
E: Let me ask you straight, will you join the marathon because of your own will or your friend talked you into joining the marathon?
Yuka pauses and lets out a big sigh.
Y: I must admit my friend's words are convincing but I guess it's time for me to try something new.
I am just worried if I will have the stamina and endurance to last the marathon.
E: If I were you, I would throw my hat into the ring. Remember that your opponent is your own self and not other people.
Who knows you might end up as the fastest runner.
Y: That's far from reality. But thank you for your encouraging words. I will do my best to train right down the wire.
My goal would be to do something extraordinary this year.
I am looking more on the positive side of making this a yearly event of mine.
E: (suddenly becomes excited) Probably I can cheer you on the big day! I can take your pictures or hand you a bottle of water or something.
Y: Nah, never mind. You might see me with a lot of stops along the way. Let your mind think that I am a dedicated and fast runner.
E: OK, wishing you all the best Yuka.

エメリーが部屋に入ってきたとき、ユカは持っている新聞に夢中だった。
E: ユカ、そんなに真剣な顔してどうしたの？
(エメリーが新聞をのぞきこむ）
Y: ええ、今度のシティーマラソンに参加するかどうか考えてるの。
E: あら、それはすごいわね、ユカ。それについて話してよ。
Y: 実はね、スポーツに才能のある友達が今年のマラソンに参加しようと誘ってくれたの。
E: トライしてみればいいじゃない？新しい挑戦をしてみて。
Y: マラソンは他のスポーツと違って簡単にできることじゃないわ。
とめどない練習が必要だわ。
E: ほんとにそうよね。その重要な日はいつなの？
Y: ９月23日よ。私の快活な友達は毎日１時間以上のランニングを始めているわ。彼女はかなり真剣なの。
E: はっきり聞くわね、自分の意思でマラソンに参加したいの、それともあなたの友達があなたに参加するように説得しているの？
ユカが大きなため息をつく
Y: 友達の言葉は説得力があることは認めるわ、でも私にとっては何か新しいことに挑戦する時期だと思うの。ただ、私に完走できるだけの体力と持久力があるかが心配だわ。
E: もし私があなたなら、競争に参加するわ。わかってるでしょ、競争相手は他人じゃなくて、自分自身よ。あなたが一番でゴールするかもしれないし、そんなの誰にもわからないわ。
Y: それは現実からかけ離れているわ。でも勇気をもらえる言葉をありがとう。最後までベストを尽くすわ。並外れたことをしてみるのが今年の目標なの。１年の行事として、もっとプラス思考に考えるわ。
E: (いきなり盛り上がる) たぶん当日は応援しに行けるわ！写真を撮ったり、水を手渡したりとかできるしね。
Y: いいよ、それは。途中で何度も止まるかもしれないし。私はひたむきで、早いランナーだと頭の中で思っておいて。
E: わかったわ、成功するように願っているわね、ユカ。
