Characters: N - Nicole Mi - Miho Ma - Maru K - Kazu

In the middle of their class discussion...

N: I already know that Maru and Kazu like alcoholic drinks. How about you, Miho?
Mi: Actually, I can't drink.
Ma: You mean you can't or you don't like them?
Mi: I can't because I easily feel dizzy with just a little amount of alcohol intake.
N: So, you can't hold your liquor. (writing it on the board)
K: That's too bad! You are missing one of the best things in life.
Ma: Ha ha! I second the motion.
N: C'mon you guys. Not everyone can drink beer like water. Right?
Mi: That's so true, Nicole. Plus, I feel bad when I drink. It feels like there are a thousand of horses inside my chest every time I sip even just a little wine. (pounding on the chest for emphasis)
K: Hey, I experience the same feeling!
Ma: While drinking?
K: Actually, I can relate to that sensation in a different situation though.
N: Such as? Do tell us, Kazu.
K: I go through that every Sunday morning. (teasing his classmates)
Mi: Huh? (feeling totally lost in the conversation)
Ma: Tell me, Kazu, do you have a heart condition that
only occurs on Sunday mornings?! (getting the hint)
N: Ahh! (finally following her learner's train of thought)
K: Actually, my heart palpitates with excitement every time I step into this office. (confounding his classmates more)
Mi: And may I ask you why?
K: It's because of the pretty and intelligent ladies surrounding me! Ha ha! Just teasing you guys.
(cracking up)
Ma: I knew it! (convulsing with laughter)
N: Oh, you guys!
K: Be still, my beating heart.

Listening to Super Mario's theme always brings back a lot of childhood memories.
I remember trying to get the 100 lives in order to be able to save the princess.
Oh how my sisters and I loved that Family Computer disk system!

Here is a version of this very popular theme with a different twist.
This is the beatbox version.
Beatboxing is a type of vocal percussion which focuses on making musical sounds using one's mouth, lips, tongue and voice.

According to the movie "Coach," soccer is like a dance with someone you like. Just by looking at the person's eyes, you can read his or her next move.
Based from this definition, then we can say that good dancers have a future in the world of soccer.
Maybe these baby dancers would soon be the future Kaká and Landon Donovan of their generation...

E: How are you, both? We missed you last week, Mi-chan.
  You did
not show up for the class. Were you all right?
M: Sorry about last week. Something unexpected came up, which required my presence and supervision.
E: I hope it is O.K. now.
M: Actually, my daughter had a traffic accident. I was about to leave the house when I received a call from a policeman who broke the news.
E: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
S: (Curious) Was she injured?
M: You could say that. She underwent surgery due to a fractured leg a day after the accident.
S: How terrible for her! She must have been in pain.
M: She was, but she is recovering fast. I think she's suffering from the trauma more than the physical pain it gave her.
E: I could only imagine. (Trying to cheer her learner up)
Well, I'm sure that with you around to care for her, she'll recuperate and get over her traumatic experience in no time.
M: I wish I had your confidence, Euneece.
S: So where is she now? Still in the hospital?
M: She was discharged yesterday and is taking things easy at home.
S: Is her leg in plaster cast?
M: Yes, and it's difficult for her to move on crutches.
The doctor said she'd be in that state for at least a month or so.
E: Were there other casualties, Mi-chan?
M: Fortunately, none. She was alone in the car, which was a wreck after crushing it into a tree at the side of the road.
S: What a horrifying scene!
M: It was a miracle she survived with only some cuts and bruises here and there, and of course, a fractured leg.
E: Well, we hope she'll recover fast and move on with her second life.
M: I hope so, too.

Why I stay awake for the World Cup games

Since the opening of the 2010 World Cup series, I have been losing sleep regularly.
Every time I say that to my friends and learners, many of them do not understand my fascination with his sport.

The major reason I rave about the World Cup is because I used to play soccer when I was in highschool.
At that time, I still could run for 45 minutes straight without getting tired... good old days!

Watching soccer games has never failed me to wish that I were on the field running after the ball.
It is such an exhilirating game to watch, especially if the players (blessed with fantastic footwork skills) are very passionate about winning.

However, there is another reason for all this craziness about soccer that only some people would admit.
This blog says it all.

Let's check your pronunciation

Below is a long English poem that a friend of mine shared with me.
According to the author, if you can pronounce correctly every word in this poem, you will be speaking English better than 90% of the native English speakers in the world.
Care to try it?

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it’s written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation’s OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger,
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little,
We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer.
Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover;
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
Petal, panel, and canal,
Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.
Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
Pronunciation (think of Psyche!)
Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won’t it make you lose your wits,
Writing groats and saying grits?
It’s a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!

Whew! That was one long poem.
How did you do?
Now try it with this video...

My Checklist

A few years back, I made a list. It was just an ordinary list of things I would like to do before my time here in Earth ends.

No, I am not depressed nor am I unsatisfied with my life. On the contrary, it is a list that would make me want to achieve more in my life.

Last Wednesday, I checked something off from that list. For the first time in my entire life, I watched a movie… alone! Yes people, I had never set foot inside a movie theater without the company of my family and friends before I came to Japan. I always felt that people would stare and feel sorry for me that I do not have anyone to watch a movie with.

Maybe the fact that I am living in Japan and is a little far from my usual movie buddies gave me the confidence to try it. It was exhilarating to say the least! Living in Japan has now given me the confidence to try things I would not normally do back home.

So, “watching a movie alone”… check! One down, more to go…

"A night to remember"

E: Emery Y: Yohei M: Maemi

Inside the classroom.

M: How was your college reunion Yohei?
Y: It was superb though I had a hangover the day after.
E: It's not alien to you anyway. How many came?
Y: (Counting his fingers) Twenty. It was a male-dominated party with only two women.
E: I bet the party was laden with endless bantering conversations. Yohei smiled sheepishly.
M: Where was it held?
Y: In a restaurant where we used to hang out in college.
M: You mean the restaurant is still alive and kicking?
Has it changed?
Y: Yeah. (Yohei shows the old and new pictures of the restaurant).
E: The place has been refurbished. Plus awnings and refulgent lights were installed.
What was the highlight of the party?
Y: After the traditional toast, the class organizer called in the guest speaker for the night. Everyone of us was aghast when our favorite History professor came forward.
The room was filled with applause.
E: You haven't seen hide nor hair of him for more than twenty years, right?
Y: Yeah. He started calling our complete names.
M: Like a roll call?
Y: Exactly. Imagine he remembered almost eighty percent of our names! He said we almost looked the same as before except for a few gray hairs and our weight. (Yohei frowned a bit).
E: Don't frown. They say being rotund means your wife is a good cook and you are living a happy life. And gray hairs mean wisdom.
Y: Thank you for lifting my spirit, Emery.
E:So what else did your professor say in his speech?
Y: He recalled the bitter and sweet memories of our college days. We were all saying our ‘ahs’ and ‘ohs.’ He brought those memories to life.
E: You had a trip down the memory lane, didn't you?
Y: Right. After the speech, everyone enjoyed chatting over some drinks
and foods. I never thought it would be that enjoyable.
E: That must have been an unforgettable night for all of you.
Emery and Yohei exchanged glances as they looked at Maemi who seemed to be daydreaming.
M: Oops, sorry about that. I can't help but imagine my own college reunion.
Y: That's why you are so quiet.
E: Oh Maemi, but you just graduated from college.
M: Yeah. (Maemi smiles like a little child.)

https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.iti.or.jp/stat/4-004.pdf

E: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Did you take your temperature?
Y: I've been meaning to but... (embarrassed) honestly, I don't have a thermometer at home. (scratches his head)

Well... some men have opted the traditional way of going down on one’s knee and asking the fair lady for her hand in marriage. However, some men prove to be more creative than others.

I stumbled upon this blog (http://www.oddee.com/item_96708.aspx) while I was researching for a good topic to write about. Listed were some interesting and extreme proposals some men did. Check them out!
