The Show Must Go On

Celebrities have a tough life, I think.
All their actions and even their misfortunes are always made public.
Just take these videos of celebrities falling down.

However, I think there is one lesson that we need to learn (and even relearn) from them.
It doesn't matter if they landed on their butts (sometimes even fall flat on their faces), the thing that matters most is that they all continued the show.
Same goes for us.
If we fall flat on our faces, we cannot just stay there on the ground.
We have to hoist ourselves up and carry on.
Remember... life (or the show) must go on!

"Just like the owner"

Characters:  N - Nicole    K - Kana   R- Rie

Nicole's learners were enthusiastically sharing pictures of man's best friends.

R: Is that your dog, Kana?  She's a Pomeranian, right?
She looks like a pom pom!  (eyed the picture of the white ball of fur that Kana was holding)
K: Yeah, she does look like one, right?
That's why their breed is also called Pom humorously.
N: She's as cute as a button!
   What's her name?
K: We call her "Duchess."
N: I guess you treat her well.
(glanced at Kana knowingly)
K: We sure do!  She's also affectionate.
R: Just like the owner?
(Kana blushed upon hearing Rie's comment)
K: How about you, Rie? Don't you spoil your precious too?
R: Guilty as charged!  I spoil Yorkie to the hilt.
Why wouldn't I?  Just look at her?
   (showed off her pet's photo)
N: Some charmer you have here, Rie.  I like the ribbon;

R: Oh boy, she does!
K: She is quite a charmer... just like the owner.
(ribbed Rie)
R: Ha ha!  You're really such a wonderful friend, Kana.
How about your pet's pic, Nicole?
N: Well... have you seen the latest picture in DCEC's photoblog?
K: The Labrador retriever with the tongue sticking out?
R: Keanu... the big boy?
N: Wow!  I'm surprised you guys know him.
R: We both like looking at the pictures you guys post in the photoblog.  It's very interesting to see how GVs view
   things through their cameras.
K: Right.  Plus, Keanu has a funny face...
N: Actually, he not only does have a funny face... but he also has a funny personality.  My sister sent me a video with Keanu digging the marble flooring in our living room with his paws.
R: Why?  (confused)
N: Good question, Rie.  Beats me!
K: So, the pet has a funny face... and the owner...
(kidded Nicole)
R: Ha ha!  Yes, Kana?
N: (teasingly retrieved her notebook where she jots down her notes about learners and classes)
   Yes, Kana... you were saying?
R-K: (in between laughter)  Nothing... nothing, Nicole.
   Woof Woof!

Maximize Your Microwave Oven

For most people who are as busy as bees, the microwave oven is the greatest invention in our lifetime.
All we have to do is zap some leftover or frozen food and voila! we have a meal in just a few minutes.
However, this gizmo has a lot more to offer than just popping popcorn and reheating leftover food.

Bake those spuds

nicole baked potato

Rub a potato with olive oil and microwave it until tender.  Once it's tender, just pile up those toppings.

Warm those tortillas

nicole tortilla

Are you a fan of Mexican food?  Soft tacos?  Burritos?  Quesadilla?
Just wrap those tortilla in a damp paper towel and zap for under a minute in high.

Want some corn on the cob?

nicole corn

Love corn?  I do!  Just place unshucked corn on plate and microwave for 6 minutes on high.
Then wait for 5 minutes before you start removing the husks and silk.

Yummy bacon

nicole bacon

Just sandwich bacon strips between two double layers of paper towels... zap it for 4-5 minutes and that's it.
No need for oil.

Give it a squeeze

nicole juice

In order to get the most juice out of those citrus fruits, warm it up in the microwave for about 20 seconds.

C: The genie in the bottle granted three out of my four wishes.
E: Wow, I'm dying to hear your wishes. What's the first one?

Tie The Knot

Almost all girls have dreamed of their wedding day at least once in their lives.
The same goes for me.
Most of us dream of that knight in shining armor to sweep us off our feet and carry us off to a happy ever after.
I think that's the result of too much fairytale books.

Today, I would like to discuss the expression Tie the knot.
The meaning is to get married.
The term may be from the nets of knotted string which supported beds prior to the introduction of metal-sprung bedframes.

"A Marvelous Bridge"

a.k.a (also known as)‐別名~
bring it on‐かかってこい

■"A Marvelous Bridge"

A: Aki T: Tre

During the free-chat…

T: Aki, do you have any interesting news to share before we start the lesson?
A: (Trying to remember…) Ah…I was able to cross a bridge on our family trip last week.
T: Crossing a bridge? I bet it was not the crossing itself that became memorable. Was there something about the bridge that tickled your excitement?
A: Yeah, it's not just a usual bridge which we see normally here in Japan. It seems that I'm transported to another place when I saw it for the
first time.
T: Let me guess… is that the Rainbow Bridge in Odaiba?
A: Nope, that bridge is famous in its own right. The bridge I am referring to is the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge or a.k.a the Pearl Bridge.
T: I'm just curious, what makes the Pearl Bridge outstanding compared with other state of the art bridges?
A: The record speaks for its grandeur and marvel. It has been the longest suspension bridge in the world since its completion in April 5, 1998. It has the longest central span of any suspension bridge at 1,991 meters.
The six-lane bridge connects the mainland of Honshu in Akashi City, Kobe to its neighboring island of Iwaya on Awaji Island crossing the busy and treacherous Akashi Strait.
T: Wow, those are jaw-dropping statistics. It seems that you have done a good read about its features. I bet the construction of the Pearl Bridge was a herculean task and a record-breaking engineering.
A: Indeed! It withstood the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 while it was under construction.
T: Very ingenious engineers and planners. They anticipated and put into consideration the frequency and intensity of earthquakes in your country.
A: Right! If I may add, the bridge has other life-saving feature that is often overlooked.
T: What is it?
A: If you will notice, the area is a perilous waterway that often experiences severe storms and claimed more than a hundred innocent lives. With that bridge linking the separated islands, the death toll is reduced during stormy months.
T: That's new information. The usefulness of that bridge could not be underestimated.
A: I agree. But the downside is the costly toll fee when you cross the bridge.
T: Well, life is priceless.
A: There's a trade-off… Hmmm, I should not think about the price considering safety, convenience and comfort that I experienced in traversing its entire length of 3.9 km.
T: Right, so are you now ready for your lesson?
A: Yup, bring it on!

A: そう!

Some things are boring for some people but very exciting for others.
What you like maybe the one that the person beside you dislikes.
