"A night to remember"
E: Emery Y: Yohei M: Maemi
Inside the classroom.
M: How was your college reunion Yohei?
Y: It was superb though I had a hangover the day after.
E: It's not alien to you anyway. How many came?
Y: (Counting his fingers) Twenty. It was a male-dominated party with only two women.
E: I bet the party was laden with endless bantering conversations. Yohei smiled sheepishly.
M: Where was it held?
Y: In a restaurant where we used to hang out in college.
M: You mean the restaurant is still alive and kicking?
Has it changed?
Y: Yeah. (Yohei shows the old and new pictures of the restaurant).
E: The place has been refurbished. Plus awnings and refulgent lights were installed.
What was the highlight of the party?
Y: After the traditional toast, the class organizer called in the guest speaker for the night. Everyone of us was aghast when our favorite History professor came forward.
The room was filled with applause.
E: You haven't seen hide nor hair of him for more than twenty years, right?
Y: Yeah. He started calling our complete names.
M: Like a roll call?
Y: Exactly. Imagine he remembered almost eighty percent of our names! He said we almost looked the same as before except for a few gray hairs and our weight. (Yohei frowned a bit).
E: Don't frown. They say being rotund means your wife is a good cook and you are living a happy life. And gray hairs mean wisdom.
Y: Thank you for lifting my spirit, Emery.
E：So what else did your professor say in his speech?
Y: He recalled the bitter and sweet memories of our college days. We were all saying our ‘ahs’ and ‘ohs.’ He brought those memories to life.
E: You had a trip down the memory lane, didn't you?
Y: Right. After the speech, everyone enjoyed chatting over some drinks
and foods. I never thought it would be that enjoyable.
E: That must have been an unforgettable night for all of you.
Emery and Yohei exchanged glances as they looked at Maemi who seemed to be daydreaming.
M: Oops, sorry about that. I can't help but imagine my own college reunion.
Y: That's why you are so quiet.
E: Oh Maemi, but you just graduated from college.
M: Yeah. (Maemi smiles like a little child.)

教室の中。
M: 大学の同窓会はどうだったの、ヨウヘイ？
Y: それはもう最高だったんだけど、次の日二日酔いでね。
E: どうせそんなの慣れてるでしょ。何人来たの？
Y: (指で数えながら) ２０。男性が主役のパーティーで、女性はたった２人だけ。
E: 冗談が飛び交う会話いっぱいのパーティーだったんでしょう ね。 (少し照れながらほほ笑むヨウヘイ）
M: どこで(パーティーは)あったの？
Y: 大学時代にぼくたちがたむろしていたレストランだよ。
M: そのレストランがまだ存在していたってことね？ 変わってた？
Y: うん。(ヨウヘイがレストランの古い写真と新しい写真を見せる）
E: この場所は改装されたのね。それから可動式天幕と光り輝くライトも設置されているわね。パーティーで一番印象深かったことは？
Y: 従来の乾杯をしたあと、クラスのまとめ役がその夜のゲスト
スピーカーを呼んだんだ。ぼくらが大好きだった歴史の教授が前に出ていらしたとき、ぼくたちは唖然としたよ。部屋中、拍手が鳴り響いていたね。
E: その教授とは20年以上まったく会っていなかったんでしょ？
Y: そう。教授はぼくたち全員の名前を呼び始めたんだ。
M: 出席をとるように？
Y: その通り。ぼくたちの名前を80％の確率で覚えていらっしゃったことを考えてみてよ！少しの白髪と体重を除けば、ぼくたちは前とまったく変わらないって教授が言ってた。
(ヨウヘイは少し顔をしかめる)
E: 顔をしかめないで。丸くなったということは、あなたの奥様が料理上手で、あなたは幸せに暮らしているってこと。そして白髪は知恵と知識よ。
Y: 持ち上げてくれてありがとう、エミリー。
E：それでスピーチの中で教授は他にどんなことを話してくださったの？
Y: 教授はぼくたちの苦くて甘い大学時代の日々を思い出していらっしゃったよ。ぼくたちはみんな「あーそうだった」、「おーそうだったよな」って言ってたんだ。教授がそんな思い出をまた呼び起こしてくださったんだよ。
E: あなたは思い出をたどる旅をしたみたいね？
Y: そうだよ。スピーチの後、みんなで食卓を囲んでペチャクチャ会話を楽しんだよ。あんなに楽しい日になるとは思ってもいなかったね。
E: あなたたち皆にとって忘れられない夜になったでしょうね。
エメリーとヨウヘイはぼーっとしていたマエミを見て、顔を見合わせた。
M: あら、ごめんなさい。自分の大学の同窓会を想像せずにはいられなかったのよ。
Y: だからあなたはそんなに静かなのね。
E: え、マエミ、でもあなたはまだ大学を卒業したばかりじゃない。
M: そうね。(マエミは小さい子供のようにほほ笑む)
