Emery is tickled pink to see her two learners after a week of
absence.
E: Hi ladies! I heard both of you were knee-deep in work.
M & A : Thank you for your mail. Sorry for our absence.
E: OK, let’s see if you will fare better in the recall and practice.
Ready?
After 25 minutes of nerve-racking question and answer, the learners were dissatisfied about the results.
E: Don’t worry, I am aware of holiday hangovers so let’s move on to our free style lesson.
M: (Raising her hand) I spent my winter holidays in the same old ways. I visited Nishiarai Daishi to pray. I also sent New Year’s cards to my friends, families and relatives. And for the rest of my holidays, I watched TV, ate and slept.
That’s all.
E: I didn’t know you are such a homebody.
A: How many New Year’s cards did you send this year?
M: (Having a mental calculation) Maybe around 50.
E: Oh, that’s a lot. Thank you for sharing. (Pulling out a bunch of pictures in her folder) I would like to share our one-day
trip to see the beauty of Mt. Fuji. Mt. Fuji is one of the must-see places for foreigners. The views were taken from Lakes Yamanaka and Kawaguchi. Though it was a bit cold and windy, we managed to enjoy the breath-taking views (showing the pictures to both).
A: Wanna give climbing a try? (while flipping the pictures)
E: I hope so in the future. OK, enough of me. Aya, are you ready to share yours?
M: So excited about it! I am green with envy.
E: Me too. Your winter holidays were loaded and there’s no room for rest.
A: I shared my winter holiday plan with you on the last day of our class in December. Friend’s wedding ceremony on Dec. 27th, drinking party on the 28th, high school class reunion on the 29th and 30th, family reunion on the 31st and 1st of January, and skiing on the 2nd and 3rd. But (makes a long pause)…
M: But what?
A: None of the plans materialized because I caught a bug and ended up in bed (with a trembling voice as if crying). I couldn’t contain my disappointment. All the excitement and fun went down the tubes because of that bug! (sadness is all over her face).
M: Snap out of it! You can still catch up with your friends and relatives this year. Plus, snow will be here until maybe March so you can go skiing.
E: Right, you can drink until you drop, anytime you want to.
Stop feeling blue.
A: Thank you guys. I agree there’s no point in feeling down.
E: Correct! There are lots of things to look forward to in 2010!

エメリーは先週欠席したラーナー二人に会うのを喜んでいる。
E: ハイ、みんな！二人とも仕事にどっぷり浸かってたって聞いたわよ。
M & A : メールありがとう。休んじゃってごめんなさい。
E: わかったわ、それじゃ、リコール＆プラクティスで二人がどれだけできるか見てみましょ。用意はいい？
25分間、神経を悩ます質問と答えに奮闘した後、ラーナーは二人ともその結果に不満げな様子だった。
E: 大丈夫よ、お正月気分が抜けないのは承知してるわ。さっ、フリースタイルレッスンに進みましょ。
M:（手を挙げて）お正月はいつもと同じように過ごしたわ。西新井大師にお参りに行って、あと友人や家族、親戚に年賀状を出して。
それ以外の残りの休みは、テレビを見て食っちゃ寝してたわ。
それだけ。
E: あなたがそんなに家でゴロゴロしてるのが好きだなんて知らなかったわ。
A: 何枚年賀状を送ったの？
M:（暗算しながら）だいたい50枚ぐらいかしら。
E: わー、多いわね。話してくれてありがとう。（フォルダーから大量の写真を取り出し）じゃあ私は富士山を見に日帰り旅行に行ったことを話させてね。富士山は外国人にとって必見の場所のひとつだもの。
景色は山中湖と河口湖から撮ったものよ。ちょっと風が強くて寒かったものの、見事な景色を満喫することができたわ。（二人に写真を見せながら）
A: 富士山に登ってみたい？（写真をパラパラめくりながら）
E: いつか、できたらね。はい、私の話はここまでと。
アヤ、あなたの話、準備はいい？
M: 聞くのが楽しみよ！ほんとうらやましい。
E: 私も。あなたの冬休みはもう予定ビッシリで休むヒマもなかったくらいだものね。
A: そう、12月の最後のクラスのときに二人に冬休みの予定を話したのよね。12月27日に友だちの結婚式、28日は飲み会でしょ、29日と30日には高校の同窓会、31日と1月1日には家族みんなで集まって、2日と3日はスキー。でも（長い沈黙の後）...
M: でも何？
A: どれ一つとして実現しなかったのよ、風邪ひいちゃってずっと寝てなきゃいけなくなったから（泣いてるかのように声を震わせ。）
どんなにがっかりしたかって。風邪のせいで、楽しみにしてたこと全部がおじゃんになっちゃったわ！（顔中に落胆の色を見せ）
M: 元気出して！友だちや親戚にはまた今年会えるじゃない。それに雪だって3月頃まで降るんだから、スキーだっていけるわよ。
E: そうよ、いつだって飲みたければ倒れるまで飲めるんだから。
さっ、落ち込むのはやめて。
A: 二人ともありがとう。確かにへこんだって仕方ないわね。
E: その通り！2010年、楽しみなことなんていっぱいあるんだから！
