As their annual tradition, the learners and Nicole were enjoying
their year-end party.
M: Here's to 2009! (making a toast)
K/H: Yeah!
N: Cheers! (clinking her mug of beer with the others)
M/H: Ah! (liking the way their drinks taste)
K: (making an observation about her classmates) It is pretty
obvious that these guys really like to drink.
N: Needless to say, Kako. (nodding her head in agreement)
M: (teasing the others) Stop bickering and let's eat.
The food is getting cold.
K: Come on everyone - dig in!
H: For starters, I'll have this. (helping himself to a slice of
tuna)
M: Nicole, have you tried this? (pointing to the dish Hashi just
tried)
N: Let me see... (looking curiously at the dish)
I don't think I have. What is it?
M: That is fish liver.
N: (wrinkling her nose a little) I see.
H: (laughing at Nicole's reaction) Don't worry. I think you'd
like it.
The consistency is almost like your favorite, sea urchin.
N: (giving in) Hmm... it's good. It's creamy.
After a couple of rounds of beer, they began talking about Masu's
hobby, cooking.
M: My latest achievement was to make a paella.
K: Wow! You have one lucky family.
That is one dish that even I can't make. (applauding her
classmate)
N: When I get married, I hope my future hubby will also be a good
cook.
H: But, Nicole, you still should learn how to do it.
N: I know. The problem is ... that is one area I am really bad at.
(admitting to her learners)
M: Cooking is as easy as ABC. Just follow the recipe.
K: Remember, practice... practice... practice!

毎年恒例行事として、ニコルとラーナー達は忘年会を楽しんでいた。
M: 2009年を祝して乾杯！（乾杯の音頭をとり）
K/H: イェイ！
N: かんぱーい！（他の3人とビールのジョッキを合わせてカチンと
鳴らし）
M/H: アーッ！（ビールの味が気に入った様子で）
K: （クラスメートを観察しながら）この二人、本当に飲むのが好き
なのね、一目瞭然だわ。
N: もちろんよ、カコ。（同意してうなずき）
M: （二人をからかい）さーさーもめごとはよしてさ、食べようよ。
料理が冷めちゃう。
K: さ、みんな。食べましょ。
H: じゃあまず最初にこれから。（まぐろを一切れ取って食べ）
M: ニコル、これ食べたことある？（ハシがちょうど食べた料理を
さして）
N: どれどれ...（その料理を興味深そうに見）ないと思うわ。
何なの？
M: さかなのレバー（あん肝）だよ。
N: （ちょっと嫌～な顔をし）へぇ。
H: （ニコルの反応に笑い）大丈夫だよ。ニコルは好きだと思うね。
触感はほら、君の大好きなウニに近いかな。
N: （従い）うん...おいしい。クリーミーだわ。
ビールを何杯か飲んだ後、みんなはマスの趣味である料理について
話し始めた。
M: ここ最近の私の成功はパエリヤを作ったことだよ。
K: おー！ あなたの家族はラッキーね。それは私でも作れない
一品だわ。(自分のクラスメートを称える)
N: 私も結婚したらよい料理人になることが将来の趣味になれば
いいわ。
H: でもニコル、料理のしかたをまずは学ばないとね。
N: 分かっているわ。問題は…それが私の苦手分野なのよね。

M: 料理はＡＢＣのように簡単だよ。レシピにそってやれば
いいんだよ。
