In today's video, "Keep Our Voices Down", the learners
are playing a game in a restaurant during an outdoor activity.
Let us eavesdrop on their conversation.

Learners: S - Mr. Sato, N - Ms. Nakamura, E - Ms. Endo,

～Two combined classes in a restaurant during the outdoor activity
B: Ah, I’m so full.
N: Me, too.
E: Blessed, what other expressions can we use when we’re full?
B: You can say “I've had enough” or “I've pigged out”.
E: I prefer the first one.
J: Since we still have 30 minutes left, let’s play the "Guess the
Word” game. I’ll have five learners for Team A and
Blessed, likewise for Team B. We’re going to choose a
category, say flowers, then think of the most difficult name
of one. The opposing team will do the same and both will
try to guess each other’s. Is everything clear?
All: Yes.
(Everyone thinks)
B: We’re ready! We've three words, 14 letters.
(with an opponent) Paper-scissors-stones.
We won! Please start, Ms. Irene. You can ask -“Is there
a letter ____?"
I: (rolls up her sleeves) Okay. Is there a letter "i?"
J: Yes. On numbers 7 and 9. It’s our turn, Ms. Nakamura.
N: Is there a letter "r?"
B: Yes. On numbers 3 and 9. Go ahead, Ms. Endo.
E: Is there a letter "a?"
J: Sorry, none. Mr. Sato, the floor is yours.
S: Is there a letter "b?"
B: Yes. Number 1.
J: Hold on. I think I know the answer. (thinks and fills in the
missing letters on the paper) Aha!
We’ll guess the word. Is it "bird of paradise"?
B: Oh, no! You’re right. How about yours?
J: German iris.
I: How did you know it that fast?
J: There are only a few flowers with three words and that starts with
letter "b."
I: Geez!
J: And my Mom happens to have a green thumb. We have our own
jungle around our house.
(all laugh) and other customers in the restaurant glanced)
B: Shh! Let’s keep our voices down.
●Useful and humorous expressions
★keep our voices down
「静かにして！」という決り文句
ここでは"our"になっていますが"your"に変えて人に注意する時もよく
使います。
E.g.
waiter："Excuse me, sir. Could you keep your voices down,
please?"
（申し訳ありませんが、もう少々お静かにお願いできますか？）
★"I'm so full",“I've had enough” or “I've pigged out”
お腹がいっぱいと言う時のいろいろな言い方。
"I'm so full" が一般的な言い方で“I've had enough”はちょっとていね
いな言い方。"I've pigged out”はカジュアルな言い方ですので改まった席で
は使わないで下さいね。
★Paper-scissors-stones
「じゃんけんぽん！」
「紙ーはさみー石」という言い方は日本の言い方と違っていますけど国
が変わっても３つとも同じものというのはおもしろいですね。
ぜひ、あなたの友達の間で流行らせてくださいね。
★the floor is yours
floorで通常思うのは「床」ですけれども、一方、政府や公共の建物でデ
ィスカッションをする場所と言うような意味もあります。そこから、重
要な会議で発言するとか発言権があるというような時にhave the floor
のように言います。
E.g.The Senator from California has the floor.
（カリフォルニア選出の上院議員が発言権を持っている）
◆「もっと静かに」
登場人物：ジュリーターJ、ブレセッドーB、
生徒たち:サトウ - S, ナカムラ - N, エンドウ - E, イトウ - I
～教室から飛び出して外で行うレッスンのレストランでの2クラス
B: あーお腹いっぱい。
N: 私も。
E: ねーブレセッド。お腹いっぱいの時他にどんな言い方ができるの？
B: "I've had enough" とか "I've pigged out" なんて言えるわね。
E: 私最初の言い方のがいいな。
J: まだ３０分あるから「言葉当てゲーム」しましょう。私が５人の生徒
さんを取ってＡチーム。ブレセッドが同じようにＢチームね。カテゴ
リーを例えば「花」とか選んで、それから最も難しい名前を考えるの。
相手のチームも同じ事をしてお互いに当てっこをします。すべて分か
りましたか。
All:了解。
（みんな考える）
B: 私たちはいいわ。３つの単語で１４文字。(相手チームと一緒に）
じゃんけんぽん。勝った！
イトウさんから始めて下さい。例えば ____の文字はありますか、っ
て聞くことができます。
I: （そでまくりをして）わかったわ。ではIの文字はありますか。
J: あります。７番目と９番目。私たちの番よナカムラさん。
N: Rはありますか。
B: ええ、３番目と９番目。さあエンドウさん言って。
E: Aの文字はありますか。
J: 残念。ありません。サトウさん、あなたの番よ。
S: Bはどうですか。
B: 最初にあります。
J: 待ってね。わかった気がする。（考えて紙に抜けている文字を書く）
あ～。当てるわよ。それは「極楽鳥」※ですか。
B: やられた。当ってるわ。あなた達のはなに？
J: ジャーマン・アイリス。
I: どうしてそんなに早くわかったの。
J: Bで始まる３つの単語の花なんか少ししかないから。
I: もー。
J: そしてたまたま私のママは植木が大好きなの。私の家の周りは自家製
ジャングルなの。（みんなが笑いレストランの他のお客さんがジロっ
と見る）
B: シーッ！もう少し静かにしましょう。
※Bird of Paradiseと言う名前の花
