キンカンって実はすごくヘルシーな食べ物だったんですね。

T: Tre S: Soren
Lunch break in the office...
S: Hey, buddy! You did not go with us for lunch. Are you trying to beat a deadline? (looking at the table).
Hmm...small oranges...no time for lunch break or are you on a diet? hahaha!
T: (exaggerating the chewing sound while winking) I'm on a South Beach diet to lose my spare tire in 10 days (holding his tummy) hehehe. Just kidding. I'm trying to increase my fiber intake. Do you want to satisfy your palate with these golden gems?
S: Golden gems? ...these are just young oranges.
T: Looks can be deceiving. These are ripe kumquats.
S: Hmmm...sounds foreign to my ears...
T: That's why it sparked off my curiosity. I found out that its current name was derived from the Chinese word cumquot’which means “golden orange” owing to its color.
S: (holding one of the fruits) So is this imported from China?
T: Definitely not. Japan is one of the few countries that cultivate kumquats. The Japanese christened this fruit as kinkan or kinkitsu for the round type and too kinkan for the oval type.
S: ...which also means gold orange... right?
T: Not exactly, it depends on the shape.
S: You remind me of my botanist teacher. hahaha! Kumquats really get into your nerve. I just wonder though... (looking blankly at the fruit)... a month ago, my niece who lives in the US mainland posted a picture of kinkan in her Facebook account.
Where do you think the source of that fruit is?
T: Chances are from the US mainland itself.
S: I doubt it (raising his broad eyebrow).
T: Well, kumquats are grown throughout Florida. The Nagami kumquat or oval kumquat is the common variety in the States which was introduced to Florida from Japan in 1885.
The other variety, the Meiwa or large round kumquat was brought into the US from Japan in 1910.
S: Oh man... a botanical jargon or historian's account? hahaha!
I feel like I'm entering in the jetsetter's lifestyle of
kumquats... hahaha! By the way, what could I get from kumquats?
T: A lot! These are good for your health - cholesterol-free, rich in vitamin C, some minerals, dietary fiber, and may contain valuable phytochemicals on the skins.
S: Wow! Small but heavily packed with nutrients! I bet your admiration for kumquats will last for a long time.
T: I can't agree more. Have some...
S: Well, I can't resist...I am already salivating.
T: Sure but save some for me... that's the last stock in the store.
S: Last stock?
T: Yup, it's a seasonal fruit and be careful not to chew on the seeds!

オフィスでランチタイム…
S: ヨォ、相棒! 僕たちとランチ行かなかったじゃん。締切の前に終わらせようとしているの？ (机を見ながら) ん…小さいオレンジか…ランチする時間がないのか、それともダイエット中？
ハハハ
T: (ウィンクしながら、大げさにくちゃくちゃ噛む音をたてる)
１０日間でぜい肉を減らすためにサウス・ビーチ・ダイエットに励んでいるんだ。 (お腹を持ち上げて) ヒヒヒ。ただの冗談だよ。
食物線維の摂取を増やそうとしているだけだよ。この黄金の宝を食べてみる？
S: 黄金の宝？…これはただの未熟なオレンジだよ。
T: 見た目はそうかもしれないよね。これらは熟したキンカンだよ。
S: ふーん…聞いたことないなぁ…
T: だからぼくの興味を引いたんだよ。この色のせいで、元々は中国語の「黄金のオレンジ」という意味を持つ「クムコット」から名前が付けられたんだよ。
S: (その果物を一つ持ち上げながら) じゃあこれは中国から輸入されたもの？
T: もちろん違うね。日本はキンカンを耕作している数少ない国なんだ。
日本では丸いほうのこの果物をキンカンかキンキツと呼んで、卵型のほうはキンカンと呼んでいるね。。
S: …それも黄金のオレンジって意味なんだ…よね?
T: ちょっと違うんだ、形によってね。
S: きみは植物学の先生を思い出させるね。ハハハ！キンカンは本当にきみの神経を刺激するんだね。でも一つ不思議に思うんだけど…
(その果物をぽかんと見つめながら)…先月、ぼくのアメリカのメインランドに住んでいるぼくの姪が、自分のフェイスブックにキンカンの写真を載せてたんだよね。その果物はどこから来たものだと思う？
T: たぶん、アメリカのメインランドだと思うよ。
S: それはどうだろうか。(太い眉毛を持ち上げている)
T: ええ、キンカンはフロリダ中で育っているよ。ナガミキンカンか卵型のが合衆国ではよくある種類で、それらは1885年に日本からフロリダ広まったんだよ。そのほかに、メイワや大きくて丸いキンカンは1910年に日本からアメリカに紹介されたんだ。
S: あーあ…植物学のわけのわからない言葉なのか歴史学者の報告?
ハハハ なんだかジェット族のキンカン生活に入った気分だよ。
ハハハ！ ところで、キンカンから何が得られるの？
T: たくさんあるよ！これらは健康にいいだろ-コレステロールないし、ビタミンＣいっぱい、ミネラルも入ってる、食物繊維に、皮には 貴重な植生化学物質が含まれていると言われているよ。
S: ホー！小さいのに栄養が詰まっているんだ！ きみのキンカンへの強い思いは長く続きそうだね。
T: 大賛成だよ！ちょっと食べなよ…
S: うん、断れないね…すでによだれが出てるよ。
T: いいい、でもぼくのも残しておけよ…店ではそれが最後のストックだったんだ。
S: 最後のストック？
T: うん、季節の果物だからさ。それから種を噛まないように注意ね！
